Comics from the past three weeks
Before I get started,
parsimonia has some more to say/more information on Willingham's irresponsible choice of words at Heroes Con. It's worth reading.
Brightest Day #3 & #4
Short version: LOL ZOMBIE ORCA.
Long version: HOW IS THIS ON ISSUE 4 AND I STILL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON OR WHERE THIS IS GOING.
I am sad that J'onn did not adopt the puppy. Martians need pets to snuggle too.
On a more serious note, look, I realize I am, like, in the minority among comics fans here, but a lot of times when a character I like gets killed off, I don't really want them to come back. I mean, I'm glad that Jade is back, and I have a few others I really think should come back, but for the most part, I'm happy for people to stay dead. And I'm especially happy for Don Hall to stay dead, which is funny, because I feel like he was never well-used by DC in the first place. I think if he does come back, it will be wrong and it will be fixed by the end of Brightest Day. Look, one of the things that encouraged me to come back to DC in the first place was that during Blackest Night, the Black Lanterns couldn't raise Don from the dead. ("Don Hall. At peace.") I'm going to be kind of upset if Don ends up some White Lantern type guy. I hope that's not where this is going.
I'm really pissed that I'm going to have to download the rest of this nonsense for Don action, though. DAMMIT, DC. >:(
Birds of Prey #2

Booster Gold #33
I really really liked this issue, guys! PONIES. JLI! J'onn being competent! Booster being sad! FURTHER PONY DRAWINGS. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about Giffen/DeMatteis on Booster Gold after #32, but I feel much better about it now. This was SO GREAT.
Justice League: Generation Lost #3
SPEAKING OF THINGS THAT ARE PRETTY GREAT.
I don't really have anything to say about this aside from *_____* This title is getting better as it goes along!
Adventure Comics #12
I like the Saturn Girl on the cover, even if she has a weirdly tiny waist? But otherwise... meh. I mean, I will always be for superheroes using their superpowers to play baseball, but this didn't do a lot for me.
I think some of it is that the more I think about
odditycollector's problem with the Legion being full of white people, the harder it is for me to really get on board Legion stories. I mean, I'd noticed before that Legion has way too many white people in it just based on, like, demographics, but I never really thought about what that means until recently. And it's troubling. (On the other hand, this has reminded me that I should start watching her
everyone_makes_it project.)
And while I love the Legion, which really appeals to me from the point of view that there are LOTS OF LADIES who TALK TO EACH OTHER about NOT DUDES, it makes enjoying sort of "meh" issues like this one, issues that have been written and rewritten bunches of times before, a lot harder.
Anyway, on top of "I am struggling with the Legion right now" this issue was just really dull. Really really dull.
Batgirl #11
This issue was BASICALLY GREAT. I don't have anything to really say about it specifically, but I really enjoy this title.
Black Widow #3
I was a little confused during this because I am not really a Marvel person, and I think maybe I needed to be to understand some of what was going on, but I still really love Daniel Acuña's art, and I liked the Black Widow vs. Elektra fight, and this title makes me wish I was more into Marvel.
JSA All-Stars #7
I am not sure why I saved this to the end, but I think it was because I had no idea that Damage is apparently dead for real. How did I miss that? The cover is kind of in bad taste, then, I think. Damn.
I liked this issue, though. Sonia came across as an actual second-language speaker and not some sort of terrible caricature like she often did in JSA. I wish we'd gotten to see some of her relationship with Grant more actually in the comics rather than being told about it, but I found this issue fairly good at portraying grief fairly sensitively.
Plus, lead-in to another Arthur Pemberton story! (I keep hoping someday Brainwave or Pat Dugan or Merry will show up to hang with the All-Stars, but it's okay if they don't. I just think what the JSA needs is more inter-family drama at all times.)
And I still really like the back-up story as well.
So that didn't, um, totally suck?
In other news,
saraht has posted For my sisters of the Caucasian persuasion, which is about the latest Big Bang race imbroglio. It was definitely something I needed to read. (link via
gloss)
